
Giorgi Sosiashvili has won the Georgian National Prize
13 February,2023Giorgi Sosiashvili has won the Georgian National Prize for the monograph “History of Little Liakhvi Gorge" (historical representation of occupied territories of Shida Kartli). The monograph was prepared within the framework of the 2021 grant competition with the support of a research center for occupied territories.
History of Little Liakhvi Gorge is an encyclopedic thesis on historical geography, political and economical history, on population, cultural heritage of Little Liakhvi Gorge. The author examines the historical past of the area and builds the theses on various foreign and Georgian sources, memoirs, scientific literature, and press. He reviews historical geography painstakingly. Onomasticon is well-founded and scientifically established. Population ethnicity and migration details are thoroughly described. Reasons and results well-recorded. One chapter of the theses describes archeological material, which gives us information on the first population of the area, creation of South Autonomous Oblast during Soviet Regime, how Little Liakhvi Gorge territories were forcefully joint by the Oblast, unceasing discontent and protests of Little Liakhvi Gorge population among other troublesome issues are well analyzed and described by the author in the monograph. Abundance of annotations and photos of lapidary and fresco inscriptions, found in the territory are added to the monograph. Without exaggeration, Mr. Sosiashvili’s monograph, published in two languages, is one of the most important and significant research on the matter. The book is an inexhaustible source for historians, politicians, teachers, students and interested persons. The English version gives foreigners a chance to receive authentic and thoroughly researched information on Little Liakhvi Gorge matters.
